Materials Testing Services Include:


  • WPS: Welding Procedure Specification is a written qualified welding procedure prepared to provide direction for making production welds to code requirements and may be used to provide direction to the welder or welding operator to assure compliance with code requirements.
  • PQR: Procedure Qualification Record is a record of variables recorded during the welding of the test coupons and also contains the test results of the tested specimens.
  • WPQ: Welder Performance Qualification. The performance qualification tests are intended to determine the ability of welders and welding operators to make sound welds.

SRC Materials Testing, LLC has the capability to test welders at our facility in Lafayette, LA. We have six test booths. Our test booths are equipped to test SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, and FCAW processes.

Tension/Compression Testing:

Measurables: ultimate tensile, yield, elongation, reduction of area, load versus strain, stress versus strain, etc.

Tensile Machine Capacities:

  • Riehle Machine: 160,000 lbs
  • Tinius Olsen Machine: 120,000 lbs
  • Acco/Riehle Machine: 60,000 lbs
  • Tinius Olsen Machine: 10,000 lbs

**All tensile testing machines are equipped with a digital data acquisition system which can produce digital graphs and raw data.

Charpy Impact Testing (Notch Toughness):
Measurables: absorbed energy, percent shear fracture, lateral expansion

  • Minimum specimen temperature: -100F (-73C)
  • Max Absorbed energy: 264 ft-lbs

Bend Testing:

Measurables: The guided bend tests on welds are used to determine the degree of soundness and ductility of groove-welded joints. The tension (convex) side of the specimen is visually inspected for open discontinuities in the weld and heat-affected zone.

Nick Break Testing:
Measurables: This test is performed to reveal internal imperfections such as slag inclusion, lack of fusion, incomplete penetration, porosity, etc in a butt weld.

Hardness Testing:

Vickers 10g to 50kg

Measurables: Rockwell hardness values are expressed as a combination of a hardness number and a scale symbol representing the indenter and the minor and major loads. The hardness number is expressed by the symbol HR and the scale designation.

Unlike Rockwell testing, the Vickers test applies only a single test force. The resultant impression or un-recovered area is then measured using a high powered microscope in combination with a filar measuring eyepiece. The Vickers diamond produces a square based pyramidal shape with a depth of indentation of about 1/7th of the diagonal length. The Vickers test has two distinct force ranges, micro (10 -1000 g) and macro (1 -100 kg), to cover all testing requirements. The indenter is the same for both ranges, therefore Vickers hardness values are continuous over the total range of hardness for metals.

Our laboratory includes state-of-the-art imaging equipment and experienced technicians capable of producing textbook-quality photomicrographs.

Chemical Analysis:
Our SpectroMaxx unit is a reliable and precise laboratory spectrometer for the qualitative and
quantitative element analysis of metallic samples. The instrument is designed for stationary use as a bench top unit. The instrument is based on Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES), the analyzing method favored by most metal producing and processing companies.

Our SpectroTest unit is a portable Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES) unit designed for field chemical analysis.

SRC Material Testing, LLC has the in-house capability to perform chemical analysis on most iron or nickel based alloys. Typical applications include: material verification, material identification, welding consumable testing, and more. A relatively small (roughly the size of a penny) sample is required for measurement.

Advanced Mechanical Testing:
CTOD (Crack Tip Opening Displacement) machining and experience per API 1104 / BS7448

In-House Machine Shop – Specimen Preparation:
SRC Materials Testing, LLC has a full in-house machine shop which provides quick, accurate and traceable sample preparation.
